Musical nomad Ashnikko breaks even further out of the box on her debut studio album, Weedkiller. On these songs, Ashnikko is part rage rapper, part feminist pop star, part disaffected rocker with emo-goth tendencies, but still somehow categorically none of the above, donning a new mask for each new expression. Weedkillers highlights come in its diverse spread of intensity and drama, with "You Make Me Sick!" a screaming diss-fest, "Cheerleader" a candy-rap bombardment with a hook that throws back to early Lana Del Rey, and the reverby reggae surf groove of "Worms" with levels of hookiness that land somewhere between Doja Cat and Sia. 100 gecs Dylan Brady adds some production color to "Worms," and elsewhere on the album, Daniela Lalita guests on the metallic and minimal dark pop banger "Super Soaker" and Ethel Cain joins Ashnikko to sing the pre-choruses on moody closing dirge "Dying Star." ~ TiVo Staff
