チャイコフスキーの『くるみ割り人形』に、E.T.A.ホフマンの原作寄りの新解釈を持ち込んだバージョンが登場。華麗な音楽と振付によってファンタジー豊かなバレエ作品として世界的な人気を博す『くるみ割り人形』ですが、当盤の指揮者ジョン・マウチェリによれば、チャイコフスキー自身は完全に納得していたわけではなかったとのこと。その理由として、E.T.A.ホフマンの原作『くるみ割り人形とねずみの王様』が持っている社会の格差や不平等に対する視点が削ぎ落されてしまったことを挙げています。そこでマウチェリは4年以上の年月をかけて物語を再構築。そうした社会的な視点を加えつつ、主人公の少女マリーが成長し国王(かつてのくるみ割り人形)と結婚するまでを600年の歳月を経ながら描きました。音楽にはチャイコフスキーの様々な管弦楽作品を転用し、朗読(英語)を加えています。

＜ジョン・マウチェリ＞
1945年ニューヨーク生まれの指揮者。ハリウッド・ボウル管弦楽団の創立時から16年間音楽監督を務め、トリノやワシントンの歌劇場の音楽監督を歴任するとともに、ミラノ・スカラ座やメトロポリタン歌劇場にも客演。数多くの作品の初演を数多く手がけた他、レナード・バーンスタインとの長きにわたる交流や、Deccaの「退廃音楽」シリーズへの録音でも知られています。
