J Records founder Clive Davis's music biz muscle may have helped grease the wheels for Jimmy Cozier's self-titled debut album, but it's Cozier's skill as a modern R&B singer that keeps listeners attentive. While the arrangements on these tunes draw from a familiar bag of hip-hop/R&B tropes, there's an undeniable warmth and groove-heavy bottom end that forestalls any notion of prefabrication. It doesn't hurt that Cozier's smooth style bears enough personal charm and good-natured feeling to pave the way into his audience's collective heart. Unlike so many of contemporary R&B's would-be mack daddies, Cozier sings of his desire to maintain a long-term committed relationship. "She's All I Got" is a good example of his mature, pragmatic approach to relationships, as he examines both the positive and negative aspects of his situation and decides that staying the course is the wisest move. It's this kind of nice-guy sensibility, combined with undeniable vocal chops, that makes Cozier appealing.
