1972年になると、ジョニ・ミッチェルの類まれなソングライティングと詩作における天賦の才能は明らかなものとなっていた。1970年発表の『LADIES OF THE CANYON』と1971年発表の『BLUE』と、2作連続でプラチナム・ディスクを獲得したばかりのジョニは、その芸術性と普遍性で後世のソングライターたちに大きな影響を与える記念碑的な作品をリリースする一方で、高まるメディアの関心に警戒心を募らせていた。スタイルの選択やロマンチックなパートナーに至るまで、彼女にまつわる様々なことがゴシップ・コラムで多く取り上げられるようになっていたのだ。(1/2)

その状況を受けて、ジョニは表舞台から身を引き、1970年にステージから早々と引退することを発表、ブリティッシュ・コロンビアのサンシャイン・コーストの静かで広大な土地に引っ越しをした。それは、実りある生活環境の変化であった。身近な自然からインスピレーションを受け、静かな隠遁生活でリフレッシュしたジョニは、後に『FOR THE ROSES』に収録されることになる楽曲たちを作り始めた。この休息が、ジョニを目覚ましく創造力に富んだ創作期間へと押し出し、1972年発表の『FOR THE ROSES』、1974年発表の『COURT AND SPARK』、そして1975年発表の『THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS』など、彼女の音楽性を広げると同時にさらに洗練された一連のアルバムたちを生み出していったのだ。彼女の冒険的かつ複雑なアレンジ、そしてバンド・リーダーとしての存在感が大きく育まれ、こういった要素が、楽曲たちにその意義を際立たせ、潜在的な力強さと可能性を与えていった。これは、ほぼ無双と言えるキャリアの中でも、最もエキサイティングな時代の1つであると言えるだろう。

2022年のグラミー賞で最優秀ヒストリカル・アルバム賞を受賞した、シリーズ第一弾となる『JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES VOL. 1: THE EARLY YEARS (1963-1967)』、そして第二弾となる『JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES VOL. 2: THE REPRISE YEARS (1968-1967)』と同様、この第三弾作品は、充実した内容を誇っている。このコレクションは、ハリウッドのウォーリー・ハイダー・スタジオで行われていたグラハム・ナッシュとデヴィッド・クロスビーとのレコーディング・セッションを訪れた際に試験的にレコーディングされた「Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire」と「For The Roses」の初期のカットで幕を開ける。

その後も、『FOR THE ROSES』や『COURT AND SPARK』、そして『THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS』といったアルバム制作時に行われていた様々なセッションから、初期デモ音源や別ヴァージョンといった貴重な音源の数々が収録されている。また、ジョニのキャリアにおいて金字塔となった1972年に開催のカーネギー・ホールでの堂々たる凱旋公演を行った際の全曲のライヴ音源や、『COURT AND SPARK』でもバック・バンドを務めたトム・スコット&L.A.エクスプレスを従えた決定的なギグを含む、様々なライヴ・パフォーマンス音源も収録されている。さらに、ジェイムス・テイラーやグラハム・ナッシュ、ニール・ヤングとセッションを行った際の楽曲も、このコレクションで聴くことができる。(2/2)
