THE APPLE BED is head Haircut Nick Heyward's pop masterpiece, a tribute to the tuneful verities of the mid-'60s Beatles, Small Faces and Searchers, early-'70s bands like Big Star and the Raspberries and early-'80s "power-pop" bands like let's Active and the Plimsouls. Beatles references abound: a tinge of the chorus of "She's Leaving Home" in the slightly grungy "Stars in Her Eyes" and the "Penny Lane"-style horn in "My Heavy Head." "The Chelsea Skies" and Just Like Sorrow" have killer choruses that'll stick in your head like anything from REVOLVER. Heyward's voice is clear and assertive, and his lyrics capture the innocence of youth as it slips away. The production is sumptuous, with real (not synthesized) strings and horns. THE APPLE BED is no nostalgic walk down memory lane--Heyward's songs rock with contempory crackle, without compromising memorable melodies. Fans of Teenage Fanclub and Gin Blossoms should check this out.
