Photographer: Norman Seeff. Unknown Contributor Role: Fritz Sonnleitner. This collection offers an introduction into some of Keith Jarrett's work for the ECM label in the 1970s. He's heard with the European ensemble he performed with, featuring Jan Garbarek on saxophone. Two tracks are drawn from their MY SONG album (though nothing from the equally rewarding BELONGING). Jarrett is heard playing solo piano from three different sets, the early and inspiring FACING YOU, STAIRCASE, and the mammoth SUN BEAR CONCERTS. Additional pieces showcase his composing for strings (the Fritz Sonleitner Quartet perform "String Quartet" from IN THE LIGHT) and his more daring explorations ("Invocations" finds him playing soprano saxophone and pipe organ at the Ottobeuren Abbey). Jarrett's output has been so immense and varied than anything on a single disc is forced to omit huge areas of his artistry. That said, these seven pieces form a nicely sequenced whole on their own, as well as offering entry points to the rest of his catalog.
