Finally, he decided to make a move toward adult contemporary pop with his 1999 album, Learning to Breathe. Truth be told, Stewart's pop move doesn't sound all that different from Shania Twain and Faith Hill's allegedly country albums, but that isn't a bad thing at all. He has a smooth, robust voice that fits well into the smooth, contoured textures of adult contemporary pop. And if he doesn't always have the material to make Learning to Breathe a totally engaging record, he and his collaborators and guest stars -- including producer Michael Omartian, Michael McDonald and Vince Gill -- have created an album that sounds pleasing even on the filler, although it's singles like "Still in Love" that remain memorable.
