MAGICA was the first new album in four years from the golden-throated Ronnie James Dio. The work was also the lead singer's first concept album, and the metal maestro delivers a powerful and stimulating work that recalls his Rainbow and early Dio years. Part of MAGICA's vintage feel is due to the reunion of key band personnel. Craig Goldy, who played guitar on DREAM EVIL; drummer Simon Wright, who played on LOCK UP THE WOLVES; and Ronnie's longtime co-writer and bassist Jimmy Bain all make return appearances.
The album centers on the fictional planet of Blessing, where evil has wiped out good (as Ronnie explains in the 20-minute closing track). The grand "Magica Theme" segues into the dark and heavy "Lord of the Last Day." "Fever Dreams" features a classic metal groove. "Feed My Head" includes the kind of chorus that can lead to mass concert singalong. "Eriel" is a metal epic that uplifts the listener with its tale of hope. "Challis (Marry the Devil's Daughter)" is a straight-ahead metal tune that picks up the pace and rocks hard. "As Long as It's Not About Love" is the premier track on the album, a power-ballad that demonstrates Ronnie James Dio's fine vocal form.
