Bebop and West Coast jazz offered by one of the great melodic improvisers in the music's history. The vast majority of these sides were recorded in the early to mid-'50s when Art Pepper worked as a sideman (mostly with Shorty Rogers), as well as on his own early sides for Pacific Jazz. The earliest version of "Straight Life" is here, as is his early fascination with Latin music in a nice version of "Tin Tin Deo," with bassist Scott LaFaro. For the most part, however, these collections on Giants of Jazz offer nothing that serious fans of an artist don't already have somewhere, and serve a somewhat less proper introduction. ~ Thom Jurek
