CHET IN PARIS VOLUME TWO collects more tracks from the Paris sessions that Chet Baker recorded for Barclay in October and November of 1955, during Baker's first extended European tour. The tour was both tumultuous and fruitful. The band he arrived with quickly fell apart; just three days before their first session, his pianist Dick Twardzik died of a drug overdose. Then drummer Pete Littman returned to the US, followed by bassist Jimmy Bond. Baker was left on his own to record and perform with unknown (mostly French) jazz talents. With one exception (the remarkable "Exitus"), all the wonderful tracks here are standards. Baker's hauntingly beautiful trumpet playing produces simple lyrical phrases that skewer and twist the melodies. The quartet's arrangements never interfere with Baker, letting him be the center of attention. High points include moody renditions of the ballads "Tenderly" and "Lover Man," as well as swinging versions of "There's A Small Hotel" and "I'll Remember April." Also included are two previously unreleased tracks, one of which is "Everything Happens To Me," the only track featuring Baker's quiet "horn-like" vocals.
