This disc documents the first and only meeting of two brilliant improvisational minds. By the time of the album's release, jazz organist Smith had been the undisputed master of the Hammond B-3 for three decades, churning out fine Blue Note and Verve sets all the while. Tenor saxophonist Harris, a contemporary of Smith's, was revered as a balladeer, a versatile shifter of styles (including electric jazz in the '70s and '80s), and as a player of Parker-inspired straight bop. This date at San Francisco's famous Keystone Korner is everything that fans of these incredible musicians would expect. On such tracks as "You'll See" and "8 Counts For Rita," Smith's flow of melodic ideas and funk-inflected rhythmic attack is dazzling--as is Harris' control of phrasing, tone, and dynamics. Ballads such as "Autumn Leaves" are given sensitive, gorgeous interpretations, while "The Sermon," one of Smith's finest compositions, allows both musicians considerable room to stretch out.
