Altoist John Handy had a unique group in the late '80s that he called Class and featured three young female singing violinists. Unfortunately on their one recording, the violin playing is de-emphasized in favor of the vocalizing (making the date much less unusual than it would have been), Handy's solos are fairly brief and the repertoire (four blues and four standards), other than one original blues, have all been recorded too many times in the past. Handy had a good thing going and his Class was one of the hits of the 1989 Monterey Jazz Festival, but this disappointingly routine set does not live up to its potential. ~ Scott Yanow
