Altoist Richie Cole has long felt that he could turn any music into bebop. On this set he really stretches that concept, tackling such numbers as "La Bamba," "Spanish Harlem," the "Theme from Star Trek" and Rudy Wiedoeft's early-'20s feature "Saxophobia." Cole is joined by a basic quintet featuring guitarist Vic Juris and pianist Dick Hindman, plus, on some selections, "the Violins of Madness"; in addition, "La Bamba" utilizes a Latin group. This is enjoyable, often humorous and somewhat eccentric music. ~ Scott Yanow
