Swedish multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer Daniel Ogren named his 2020 album Fastingen-92 after a carnival in his hometown that made a major impression on him as a young child, causing him to fall in love with music. The artist worked closely with Anna von Hausswolff on several of her early albums, and additionally carved out his own distinct music world with his solo releases, which blend jazz, psychedelic, and international folk influences, particularly from South America and Scandinavia. Like most of his albums, Fastingen-92 was given a very limited physical release, but it attracted enough attention through online streaming that it became somewhat of a breakthrough record for him, and was later given a wider release by Mr Bongo, a British label dedicated to unearthing fascinating sounds and films from across the globe. Created mostly by Ogren with guests on a few songs (particularly drummers and keyboard players), Fastingen-92 is a whimsical, freewheeling album that at times comes close to a modern-day equivalent of exotica. Opener "Annalena" is a lush, rollicking post-Tropicalia groover, and "Hjalmarsfjorden" is a joyous, funky synth rocker which suggests that his influences are filtered through hip-hop beatmaking, yet doesnt necessarily sound like a hip-hop instrumental. "Idag," sung by Anna Ahnlund, is the albums clear highlight, a truly enchanting rare-groove pop gem that immediately sounds like a lost classic. The song turned out to be the genesis for Dina Ogon, a smooth psychedelic soul band led by Ahnlund and Ogren which explores similarly new-vintage sounds. "Kristinehamn by Night (For Christopher)" is one of the albums most unabashedly celebratory moments, but much of the rest of the set is more relaxed and contemplative. "Levi" is uncharacteristically sluggish and haunting, but others like "Oktober (For Lo)" still have a gentle, breezy sway to them. Bonus song "April" is another delight, starting out sort of like baroque pop but eventually gaining acid-rock guitar soloing and multi-layered percussion, finally clearing out for a solemn, delicate piano outro. Fastingen-92 is a truly unique record by a creative visionary. ~ Paul Simpson
