Rachika Nayars beguiling 2021 debut, Our Hands Against the Dusk, twisted guitars, strings, and pianos through a web of digital processing, often transforming the instruments far beyond recognition. A companion EP, fragments, focused on melodic, atmospheric guitar miniatures, evoking post-rock and Midwest emo as well as jazz guitarists like Pat Metheny. Heaven Come Crashing, her second full-length, is an ambitious work that draws from raw emotions, blowing them up to cinematic proportions. While bringing to mind albums by artists like Noveller and Mark McGuire, Heaven Come Crashing approaches guitar-based ambient/post-rock from a different perspective, taking inspiration from anime soundtracks and uplifting trance anthems. The record is both wide-eyed and ethereal, and it subverts expectations by ascending and expanding when one least expects it. The fizzing soundscape "Tetramorph" seems to take off halfway through its ten-minute length, yet it still builds anticipation, ending with a patch of jumpy beats and guitar arpeggios. "Nausea" backs its dreamy pianos and lonesome guitar figures with booming bass, and it all feels like its moving far above the planets surface. The albums transcendent, accurately named title track, featuring maria bcs sublime vocals, catches the listener off guard when a flurry of Amen breaks blast through out of nowhere. "The Price of Serenity" provides a different type of rush, as its pianos speed up and a thundering snare roll leads into a more worked-up beat pattern at the end. The digital-only "Our Wretched Fate," another collaboration with bc, seems to beam everything back down to Earth, triumphantly touching down with one last burst of breakbeats and soaring melodies. ~ Paul Simpson
