ギリシャがオスマン帝国からの独立を宣言したのは1821年。当時からウィーンやベルリンに出て音楽を勉強した人たちがいました。20世紀の初めには、彼らの弟子たちや、新たにドイツやオーストリアに留学した人たちが盛んに作品を書いていて、ギリシャ政府も伝統を採り入れた教育活動に力を入れていました。このCDの収録曲は、そのようにして生まれた作品です。テッサロニキ国立交響楽団が持っている楽譜から選ばれていて、未出版の曲もあります。
録音はコロナで演奏会がキャンセルになっている時期だったので、特別な感慨がありました。ヨーロッパとアジアの境目にあるギリシャでは、ヨーロッパの影響もアジアの影響も強く感じられます。このアルバムではギリシャの民族音楽特有のポリリズム的な要素を持った曲が多く、ギリシャ独特の色が出ていると思います。みなさんもお楽しみ下さい。―ノエ・乾

20世紀ギリシャの作曲家による管弦楽作品集。アルバムは、フランス印象派からの影響が感じられるミカエリデスの「パルテノン神殿の夜明け」で幕を開け、リムスキー=コルサコフを思わせる官能的な響きが特徴のカロミリスの「島の絵」が続きます。地中海の夜明けを思わせる伸びやかな第1曲から祝祭的な雰囲気の民族舞踏を描いた第3楽章まで、卓越したヴァイオリンを披露するのはギリシャ人の母を持つノエ・乾です。コンスタンティニディスの2つの組曲は独特な音階とリズムが特徴。スカルコッタスの「5つのギリシャ舞曲」は、様々な楽器編成のための「36のギリシャ舞曲」から作曲家が5曲を選んで弦楽四重奏にしたものを、ドイツ生まれの指揮者・作曲家ワルター・ゲールがコントラバス・パートを加えて弦楽合奏にしたもの。バルトークの「ルーマニア民俗舞曲」のギリシャ版といった感じの楽しく躍動感ある音楽で、本物の民謡に加えてスカルコッタスが民謡に似せて創った素材を使っていて遊び心が感じられます。

Topos, or a sense of place, is the theme of this collection of Greek orchestral works, most of which will be unknown to non-Greeks. The exception is the popular group of Greek dances by Nikos Skalkottas, which exist in various forms; they are heard here in an arrangement by Walter Goehr. These are the most bracing works; they do not quote Greek folk music directly but create new music out of its rhythms and shapes in a manner reminiscent of, if not Bartok, at least Falla. The rest of the works, one supposes, will find an audience among vacationers who want a souvenir of their trips to the Greek islands, and indeed, the album landed on classical best-seller lists in the late summer of 2023. They are languid works, evocative of various Greek scenes ("Dawn at the Parthenon," "Island Pictures"), in idioms that variously reflect French Impressionism, Respighi, and Russian colors. One wonders whether the two Dodecanesian Suites of Yanni Constantinidis might contain a Schoenbergian influence, but actually, the Dodecanese are islands in the Aegean Sea. The performances by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra under Zoi Tsokanou, its first female conductor, are very fine, with the carefully controlled solo violin from Noe Inui in Manolis Kalomiris Nissiotikes zografies ("Island Pictures," which do have some Greek dance rhythms as well) a standout. This enjoyable music will be of interest to fans of the 20th century nationalist schools and should expand the Greek repertory beyond a few familiar names. ~ James Manheim
