Richard Band's delightful score for the 1985 cult-classic horror film Re-Animator is a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek tribute to the enduring genius of composer Bernard Herrmann's work on Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. While successfully recapturing Herrmann's trademark intensity and atmosphere, Band deliberately sabotages the escalating dread via woodwinds and electronic drums that beautifully underscore the absurdist humor of director Stuart Gordon's vision. Though performed by the Rome Philharmonic Orchestra, the music is more garish than graceful, wryly commenting on the increasing banality of the horror genre as a whole. La-La Land's 2003 reissue is a must-have for Re-Animator's legion of fans. In addition to the complete original score, it contains a new interview with Band as well as a generous sampling of stills. ~ Jason Ankeny
