With a style that manages to be simultaneously traditional and modern, Randy Travis opened the floodgates for today's current crop of country superstars, including Garth Brooks, Clint Black and Alan Jackson. While he never actually went away, previous to this album he'd been more visible as an actor than as a singer. But Randy's debut release for DreamWorks records, You and Only You, is a giant step towards returning him to his rightful place on top of the charts. Randy's unmistakable voice is in the forefront throughout this immaculately-produced collection, and the songs range from the touching ["Satisfied Mind"] to the romantic ["One Word Song"] to the humorous ["Only Worse"]. Vince Gill and Alison Krauss are on hand to lend vocal assistance, and even actor Patrick Swayze, Randy's co-star in the movie "Black Dog," pops up, singing harmony on "I Did My Part." Two highlights are the fiddle-driven "Out of My Bones," about a man desperate to get his old lover off his mind, and "The Hole," in which Randy's voice swoops down just as deep as the metaphorical hole that the song's main character digs for himself. While YOU AND YOU ALONE is no great departure, it is a reaffirmation of an undeniable talent.
