Called giyaman for its diamond-like appearance, cut glass first arrived in Japan in the Edo period (1603-1868) on ships sailing from the Netherlands. Local artisans soon developed their own techniques and patterns for producing the sparkling tableware, and Japanese kiriko was born. In the capital city of Edo, clear, colorless glass was the height of style, while in Satsuma, the fashionable favored a rainbow of colored ware.
