When an indie band makes the leap to a major label there are inevitably cries of 'sell out !' from the corners of the too-hip-to-breathe, yet it's hard to imagine that any of those types would be disparaging of Jonathan Fire*Eater's first major label offering. All of the bands' mystique, charm and talent are completely intact. JF*E are shambling, but never sloppy. The songs are infectious without resorting to obvious hooks and filled with cryptic-but-vivid imagery.
With their ever- present Farfisa, their closest musical forebears may be ? and the Mysterians, although there is absolutely nothing retro about their music. The reckless, drunken wheeze of the disc's closer, "In-patient Talent Show," veers closer to some of Tom Waits' more outre work. Singer Stewart Lupton's lazy drawl falls someplace between a youthful Mick Jagger and a swaggering Sylvester the Cat. At times it sounds like his tongue is a few inches too long for his mouth, flopping around and baptizing the microphone with saliva. With WOLF SONGS FOR LAMBS, Jonathan Fire*Eater has staked out it's own distinct territory. Now please, just remember to put the asterisk in the right place.
