In the time-honored tradition of Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, Chris Rock's ROLL WITH THE NEW uses spicy language to address topics of race, relationships and black culture. Taken from a live performance recorded at Washington D.C.'s Takoma Theater in May 1996 and used for the HBO special "Bring The Pain," Rock's routines are interspersed with newly recorded sketches. De La Soul producer Prince Paul was at the helm for these and his influence stands out in "Press Conference," a bit in which O.J. Simpson and Ike Turner answer questions with samples from classic rap songs a la Dickie Goodman's 1975 hit "Mr. Jaws." Rock's rapier wit and hilarious impressions of various characters are aided by assorted pranksters including Mario Joyner, Dave Chappelle and Judy Gold. Equally funny are the musical parodies featuring such musicians as Oran "Juice" Jones, Vernon Reid and Freedom Williams.
