The idea behind Bluegrass is as simple and self-explanatory as its title: the album finds Willie Nelson revisiting 12 songs from his vast songbook, delivering them with a bluegrass spin with help from mandolinist Dan Tyminski, bassist Barry Bales, banjoist Ron Block, fiddle player Aubrey Haynie, and dobroist Rob Ickes, among others. Its not a major shift for Willie. Hes sung bluegrass songs and played with bluegrass instrumentation over the years; the main difference is that Bluegrass is specifically dedicated to the genre. The new musicians keep Nelson on his toes, as does the presence of a new guitar. As he told the AARP prior to the albums release, this is the first record hes cut without Trigger since getting the guitar in 1969. Willie doesnt miss a step picking up another guitar; hes playing leads and rhythms that are spry and tuneful, hardly sounding like a musician who has just turned 90. The lively setting and empathetic harmonies help turn Bluegrass into an enjoyable detour: nobody is stretching themselves, theyre merely laying back and having a good time, and thats hard not to enjoy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
