The first of two albums borne of this era, 2023s Toxic Positivity finds the Used in a familiar space: angry, desperate, and ready for attack. There arent many surprises here, with vocalist Bert McCracken balancing sheer rage and throat-shredding screams with soaring, vulnerable singing that pairs well with some of the midtempo cuts (like "House of Sand"). A little pop-punk, a little metalcore, with some of the songs sounding a bit like Fall Out Boy trying to be angry, theres enough for longtime fans to wax nostalgic about the Used of old. "Pinky Swear," "Dopamine," and "Dancing with a Brick Wall" are the clear standouts. This set was quickly followed by MEDZ, a 2024 sibling release. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
