Personnel: Julie Wilson (vocals); William Ray (piano).
Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York on December 7, 1987. Includes liner notes by Gary Stevens.
The delightful cabaret singer Julie Wilson has recorded many composer songbooks with her indefatigable accompanist William Roy, including those of Sondheim, Gershwin, and Porter. But it is this 1989 Kurt Weill collection that still stands out, perhaps because Weill himself consciously wrote in the cabaret mode in his early days. Like many older cabaret singers, whatever voice Julie Wilson might have had in her youth is pretty much gone now. What has replaced it is a keen professional understanding of what popular songs are for and the skill to communicate them through an uncannily American song-speech, sophisticated and common all at once.
Most other singers, when faced with Weill's pungent melodies and the biting lyrics provided by Brecht and others, go for a surface kind of cynicism. Wilson draws the opposite lesson from familiar narratives like "The Bilbao Song," "Surabaya Johnny" and a boisterous "Mack The Knife," the lesson of surviving life's inevitable blows in style, one's sense of fun intact.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
