USインディーロック/フォークの枠を越え、グラミーにもノミネートを果たし、現行のUSバンドの中では絶大なる支持を得るバンド、ビック・シーフ。そのギタリストでありバンドの楽曲にも多大な影響をもたらすバック・ミークが、最新ソロ・アルバム『Haunted Mountain』を〈4AD〉よりリリース。
アルバム収録11曲のうち実に5曲を彼の長年の友人であるアメリカの女性シンガー、ジョリー・ホーランドと共作したものとなっている。
アルバムタイトル曲であり先行シングル「Haunted Mountain」の最初の2つのヴァースとコーラスは、ジョリー・ホーランドがカリフォルニア州北部のシャスタ山に捧げるラブソングとして書き、最後のヴァースをバック・ミークが加え、共に自然との互恵関係を求める内容となっている。
「この曲は、自分がパワーをもらっているものに対して謙虚になることで、そこから、本当の意味でフェアな関係が始まるということを歌っている」と語っている。
バック・ミークのバンドは、デビュー以来一貫してアダム・ブリスビン(ギター)、オースティン・ヴォーン(ドラム)、マット・デビッドソン(ペダルスティール、『Buck Meek』と『Two Saviors』ではベース)というメンバーで活動してきた。本作『Haunted Mountain』のレコーディングに至るまでの1年ほどは、ケン・ウッドワード(ベース)、そしてバック・ミークの弟であるディランがピアノとシンセでセッションに参加した。バンドのメンバーであるデヴィッドソンがプロデュースを手がけ、エイドリアン・オルセンによって2週間で録音・ミキシングされ、モジュラーシンセサイザーによる音響加工も行っている。
土臭くも穏やかなインディーフォークと、甘美な歌詞が融合した新たな名作がここに誕生した。

Newly signed to his groups label, 4AD, Big Thiefs Buck Meek reassembled his backing band from his previous album, Two Saviors (2021), for his third solo LP, Haunted Mountain. A slightly more ambitious outing, sonically speaking, it adds dedicated bass player Ken Woodward to the core lineup of multi-instrumentalist Mat Davidson (aka Twain), Adam Brisbin (guitar), Austin Vaughn (drums), and brother Dylan Meek (keyboard instruments), as well as accents of modular synthesizer by recordist/mixer Adrian Olsen. Produced by Davidson and recorded live in the studio as a group to 2" tape, the album also retains Bucks good-natured, rustic alt-country qualities, with the synths and live spontaneity providing touches of atmosphere and whimsy. Fellow Texan and singer/songwriter Jolie Holland co-wrote five of the albums 11 songs, including the title track, a lively, steel guitar-ornamented tribute to Northern Californias Mount Shasta. Its marked by Meeks trademark sweetness and yodel-inflected phrasing. Although technically not the first track -- thats the druggy, delay-fueled prologue, "Mood Right," which is closer to Big Thiefs U.F.O.F. than to any of Meeks prior solo material -- "Haunted Mountain" gets the party started. The celebration continues on full-band tracks like the striding "Undae Dunes," "Where Youre Coming From," and "Cyclades," which features angular electric guitar interjections and transitory "I Want You (Shes So Heavy)"-like chord progressions. In between these jauntier tunes are tenderer entries such as the Davidson-harmonized "Lagrimas," a song about grief and writing, and the bittersweet, borderline sunshine pop tune "Didnt Know You Then." Stripped back to acoustic guitar and fiddle, folk highlight "Lullabies" incorporates quotes of "You Are My Sunshine" alongside Meek gems like "Eyes gold like butterflies in the wind" and "Their stories told with languages below words." An album of many strengths -- poetic yet folksy lyrics, charming melodies, an A-plus band, and disarming sincerity -- Haunted Mountain is another delight in a solo career that deserves to be more than a sideline of his Billboard 200-charting main gig. ~ Marcy Donelson
