ジャズ、エレクトロニカ、UKベース・ミュージック、アンビエントなど、様々な音楽性を内包したクロス・オーバーな作風で人気を博す北ロンドンの異能、ロレイン・ジェイムス。昨年行われた初の来日ツアーが完売となり、ここ日本でも大きな注目を集める彼女がコード9率いるUK名門〈Hyperdub〉から3枚目となる最新アルバム『Gentle Confrontation』をリリース!
本作は、彼女の過去と現在をつなぎ、彼女自身にとっての新しい章を開く作品だ。この作品は彼女が10代の頃に好きだったドゥンテル(DNTEL)、ルジン(Lusine)、テレフォン・テル・アヴィヴ(Telefon Tel Aviv)のようなマス・ロックやエモーショナルなエレクトロニック・ミュージックを聴きながら制作が行われ、気だるさや楽しさ、様々なフィーリングを感じさせる仕上がりとなっている。シカゴ出身の新鋭シンガーKeiyaA、ニュージャージーのバンドVasudevaでギタリストとして活躍するCorey Mastrangelo、名門〈PAN〉からのリリースで注目を集めたピアニスト/SSWのMarina Herlop、ヴィーガン率いる〈Plz Make It Ruins〉から昨年リリースした作品が注目を集めたロンドンのGeorge Riley他、これまで以上に多くのゲストを起用している。『Gentle Confrontation』は、人間関係(特に家族関係)、理解、そして少しの優しさと気遣いをテーマにしており、水のような柔らかい質感のアンビエンスが漂う中で、ポリリズムやASMRなビートが広げられたエレクトロニック・ポップ・ミュージックの新たな地平を開く、彼女にとっての最高傑作が完成している。
マスタリングはテレフォン・テル・アビブのメンバー、ジョシュア・ユースティス(Joshua Eustis)が手がけ、シャバカやキング・クルールを手がけるディリップ・ハリス(Dilip Harris)がミックスを担当した。
また本作のCDには、LPに収録されないボーナス・トラック「Scepticism with Joy ft. Mouse on the Keys」が収録される。

Loraine James reflected on her London upbringing and her queer identity with her stunning 2019 breakthrough effort For You and I. 2023s Gentle Confrontation is another highly personal album in which James looks back on her family, and the people and music who helped shape her adolescent years. "2003" specifically addresses the confusion and resentment she felt when her father died while she was seven years old, and how her mother protected her and tried to help her understand. Her stark, echoing vocals call out over a shimmering loop of vocals twisted so they sound angelic, and the track is easily one of the calmest moments on an album populated with more frantic tracks. Opening song "Gentle" starts out with the relaxing ebb and flow of strings, but soon gets invaded by a flurry of scattered breakbeats, while James pitch-shifted vocals express a yearning for something more. Tracks with guest vocalists like KeiyaA, Eden Samara, and George Riley brilliantly combine airy synths and floating vocals with twitchy, microscopic beats, creating a unique ambient-glitch-R&B hybrid informed by both drillnbass and U.K. drill. The intricate, math rock-inspired melodic patterns of "One Way Ticket to the Midwest (Emo)" point to bands like American Football and other formative influences, while Morgan Simpson of black midi adds jazzy drumming to the ecstatic waves of "I DM U." "Cards with the Grandparents" is built around self-exploratory samples from a family gathering, with James extremely grateful to be able to spend time with them, especially her grandfather, who has dementia. Other tracks are about James own struggles with self-care and self-acceptance, such as the more aggressive "Tired of Me" (and its prelude) and "Im Trying to Love Myself." Restlessly creative and challenging, Gentle Confrontation is James most moving work since For You and I. ~ Paul Simpson

別名義でのアンビエント作品も素晴らしかったハイパーダブの才人による2年ぶり3作目。柔らかい質感のアンビエンスが漂うなか、ジャズ～エレクトロニカ～UKベースのエッセンスを散りばめながら展開し、エレクトロニック・ポップ・ミュージックの新たな地平を切り開いている。その真価はヴォーカリストを招いて裏方に徹した"Deja Vu"などで特に顕著だ。
