BGO's 2014 two-fer pairs Jimmie Spheeris' third and fourth albums: 1975's The Dragon Is Dancing and 1976's Ports of the Heart. Both of these records are effective showcases for the charms and eccentricities of Spheeris, while also being proof of why he remains a cult act. He had plenty of subtle skills, well-connected friends, interesting ideas, and studio polish, all of which are on display on these two records, but neither album is one to beg a listener's attention. Spheeris seems to fade back into his surroundings, his songs a little too elliptical for the grandiose slickness, and the results can be interpreted in one of two ways: enjoy them for the studiocraft or listen beyond that surface and find them to be interesting, sometimes baffling, songs. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
