Although Joe Bushkin started his career in swing bands and recordings with Eddie Condon, this CD (which reissues his sessions from 1978 and 1985) has...no real surprises. Bushkin's piano here plays closer to cocktail music than to jazz and his vocals...are charming enough...Bing Crosby sings on two short numbers from what must have been among his final recordings, and a few excellent swing players (including cornetist Warren Vache and clarinetist Phil Bodner) pop up on the later date...Most of these performances are in the "and then I wrote" vein. Joe Bushkin seemed to have either forgotten his jazz roots or not considered it worth revisiting, making this a pleasant set...and nothing more. ~ Scott Yanow
