自身のルーツであるテープ・エディットを駆使したアンビエント、電子音楽、現代音楽、クラシック音楽などの要素を感じさせる実験的コンポジションと、これまでの音楽活動で培われたメロディーがオルークの豊かな感性の元に融合した、美しくもミニマルなサウンド・トラック作品となっています。

Though Jim ORourke scored dozens of films beforehand, the appropriately unsettling soundscapes the producer/composer created to accompany 2021 gothic drama Hands That Bind is the first to see wide-scale release as a soundtrack. Set in the slow-moving, rural environments of Canadian farming communities, the film is built on ambient, indirect tension, and ORourkes soundtrack reflects back the heavy but unobtrusive moods of the film marvelously. The soundtrack is made up of just eight pieces with loaded, sometimes menacing titles like "You Have No Idea What I Want," "A Mans Mind Will Play Tricks on Him," and "One Way or Another Im Gone." In each of these, ORourke melts together electro-acoustic instruments until the sizzle of a bowed cymbal is indiscernible from a buzzing synth tone, or droning strings disappear into the hard-to-place sounds of blurry field recordings. Its a minimal and slow-moving score that rarely breaks out of its eerie stillness. Though Hands That Bind isnt quite a horror film in the traditional sense, ORourkes score conveys a subliminal treat in its moody atmospherics. As with so many similarly powerful film scores, this one offers an enveloping listening experience that doesnt rely on the images it accompanies. ~ Fred Thomas
