バンド自身が"最高傑作"と評するこのアルバムは、ソウルフルなポップ・ミュージック、エレクトロニック・ミュージック、R&Bなど様々な音楽性をバンド独特のバランスで詰め込んだ全11曲にわたる作品となっており、デーモン・アルバーン(ゴリラズ/ブラー)とJ・コールのレーベル〈Dreamville〉所属の気鋭のラッパー、JIDがゲスト参加している。作品はヨーテボリ・スタジオで録音され、一聴してそれとわかるユキミ・ナガノのボーカルに支えられたアルバムとなっている。

また、アルバムについてリトル・ドラゴンは「私たちはコラボレーションやコミュニケーションの方法を模索してきた。パターンを分解し、新しいものを作る。好奇心を持って鍵盤をひいたり、時には激しく、時には優しく、様々なものを叩いたり、弦を弾いたり、音を録音したり、音にどれだけ手を加えることができるか、その限界に挑戦したり、前へ、後ろへ、横へ、あらゆる方向に進化するこの音楽に合わせて、一緒に探求したり、再生したり、ダンスしたり、泣いたり笑ったりして、完璧な作品が完成した。これはこれまでの中でも最高傑作だと感じている。とても誇りに思う。」と語っている。

Reliably consistent with the triennial album release pattern theyve maintained since the 2014 arrival of Nabuma Rubberband, Little Dragon similarly arent liable to stun or surprise with the songs that make up Slugs of Love, their seventh album. Theyve stated their keenness for changing their methods of collaboration, but what results this time is simply another durable batch of the slightly eccentric R&B-inspired pop for which the group are known, recorded as usual at their Gothenburg studio in mostly self-contained fashion. The featured one-off guests contribute inconspicuously enough so as not to disrupt the energy. A voluble verse from Spillage Village/Dreamville rapper JID gives the feel of a true dialogue with Yukimi Nagano on "Stay," in which the two embrace the potential of a developing romance in the face of uncertainty. Standing out more is the capering action of what sounds like a Yamaha DX7, the digital synthesizer that ruled commercial airwaves in the latter half of the 80s. Equally unimposing is Damon Albarn on the tranquil trip-out "Glow," returning the favor of Little Dragons contributions to Gorillazs Plastic Beach. Although he isnt featured, Durand Bernarr -- whose LD covers no doubt helped diversify the groups audience early on -- picks up a co-writing credit on the highlight "Disco Dangerous," a delightfully dizzied number with one of Naganos wispiest and most charming performances. The singer confesses to being "a neurotic mess" in the opening "Amoban," and theres sorrow in the purposefully ragged "Kenneth," but letting go, living it up, and delighting in overindulgence win out thematically across the album. The best of the lot might be "Frisco," a discreet declaration of liberation that with equal ease could be transformed into an acoustic jazz ballad or a storming house anthem. ~ Andy Kellman

ユキミ・ナガノを擁するスウェーデンのバンドの、ニンジャ・チューン移籍後2作目となる3年ぶりの新作。その間にはFKJとのコラボやレミ・ウルフのリミックスも経験したが、今回は本人たちいわく〈最高傑作〉と評しているそうで、多様なスタイルが良い流れとバランスで披露されている。鮮やかなリズムと情緒のある歌声を融合したエレポップやダビーなダウンテンポ、ソウル・ポップなど展開の妙で景色を切り替え、ノスタルジックな"Stay"にはドリームヴィルのJIDを、アトモスフェリックな"Glow"にはデーモン・アルバーンをそれぞれフィーチャー。カラフルさと統一感を両立した上々な一枚だ。
