2017年にイスタンブールのInverted Spectrumからデジタルのみでリリースされた作品を新たに再構築したもの。70年代から80年代にかけて製造されたヴィンテージのキーボードを用いてレコーディングを行い、これらの機械に内蔵されたリズムボックスがサウンドの下地となり、メロディーは同時期のフランス、イタリア、トルコのポップミュージックやサウンドトラックから影響を受けている本作。エロティックなものからメロドラマ的なものまで、古いトルコ映画やヨーロッパ映画のムードへの暗示にあふれ、1980年代にトルコの都市のナイトライフで流行したいわゆる"tavern music"(「酒場音楽」)の精神と柔軟なポップスタイルを継承したそう。結果、ブルース・ハークがマーティンデニーと密会をしたようなエキゾチックで妖艶な唯一無二の内容に仕上がっています。2023年にこれをリリースしようと思ったアーティストに最大の敬意を!

Hatıralar is the second album from Turkish musician and sound designer Gozen Atila, who records under the name Anadol. A delightfully offbeat collection of murky instrumental synthesizer compositions, the album -- originally recorded in 2012 -- saw a limited digital release in 2017 that was largely eclipsed by Atilas two more-widely distributed follow-ups, Uzun Havalar (2019) and Felicita (2022). On those two later albums, Anadols production leans more heavily into a mixture of jazzy psychedelia and quirky musique concrete, but on Hatıralar, her craft as a composer is more squarely in the foreground. Reissued here by German imprint Pingipung Records (Atila is based in Berlin), the 2023 version of Hatıralar is a gently remixed and edited version of the original, in part to serve its debut on vinyl. Prior to launching the Anadol project, the Istanbul native worked in a multitude of creative facets, from photography and design to producing radio shows, DJing, and composing for short films. Anadol, named for an old Turkish automotive company, was an attempt to move away from her more academic sound design pursuits and make melodic, albeit peculiar music. Played on vintage 70s and 80s mini organs, replete with endearing prefab rhythms, the songs here hearken back to classic European soundtrack music and what in Turkey was often referred to as "tavern music." Burbling arpeggios and snaky melodies rule the day here as Atila dances down the back alleys of instrumental pop, creating loads of atmosphere with what is essentially minimalist, lo-fi Muzak. Less refined than the Anadol records that followed it, Hatıralar is nonetheless deeply charming, with no small amount of craft and an appealing sense of whimsy. ~ Timothy Monger
