プリンスが1998年に完全にインディペンデントとしてリリースしたボックスセット『クリスタル・ボール』に収められていたアコースティック・アルバム『The Truth』のアナログ盤。
プリンスの作品としては最も過少評価されているが、隠れた名盤として知られている。プリンスのソング・ライティングやボーカルの魅力を、削ぎ落されたサウンドで味わうことができる。アートワークを手掛けたのは、プリンス作品のアートディレクターを長年務めるスティーヴ・パーク。

Originally released as a bonus disc on the 1998 song-clearinghouse Crystal Ball, The Truth is an oddity in Princes catalog -- a largely acoustic album offered as an extra on an already over-stuffed collection. The notion of an acoustic Prince album is enticing, but The Truth doesnt feel entirely realized. Sometimes the productions seem spartan and sometimes the songs do, as if Prince hasnt finished a final draft. A few songs cut through the ambling, rambling murk -- 3rd Eye teases some mysticism, The Other Side of the Pillow is sprightly -- but its a record thats better as a concept than it is as a reality. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
