『Shadow Kingdom』は、ボブ・ディランがこれまでに書き上げ、さまざまに語られてきた名曲群の、まさに究極の21世紀ヴァージョン。「いつまでも若く」、「イッツ・オール・オーバー・ナウ、ベイビー・ブルー」などのよく知られた曲から、「クイーン・ジェーン」、「悪意の使者」といった秘宝とも呼ぶべき曲までが収められている。もともと『Shadow Kingdom』は2021年7月のストリーミング限定フィルム・イベントで公開するために、それら名曲群に新たな解釈を加えたうえで制作されたものだが、今回初めてCDとアナログ盤で発売される。アルバム『Shadow Kingdom』のセットリストは、ディラン自ら選び出した13曲と、クロージングで使われたインストゥルメンタル「シエラのテーマ」で構成されている。また、2023年4月に行われた日本ツアーの演奏曲と5曲が重複しており、アレンジは異なるものの興奮が再び蘇る。

With the Never-Ending Tour grinding to a halt due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, Bob Dylan staged a startling original concert in Shadow Kingdom, a live-in-the-studio show captured in a noir-ish black & white film. Stripped of those striking visuals on this 2023 album -- released two years after the film aired for a brief time on the internet -- the music sounds remarkable, a genuine reimagination of Dylans warhorses. Despite arriving a year after the acclaimed Rough & Rowdy Ways, this collection earns its subtitle of "The Early Songs of Bob Dylan": with the exception of "What Was It You Wanted," which debuted on 1989s Oh Mercy, and the instrumental coda "Sierras Theme," all these songs date from the 60s and early 70s. The key to Shadow Kingdom is that hes not performing any of these songs like he did at the time they were written. Theyre given inventive arrangements that are right in the vein of the pan-American roadhouse music hes been making since the dawn of the 21st century: theyre blues and rockabilly, theyre soul and country, theyre standards meant to be crooned in a saloon. Dylan plays with his vocal phrasing, relying on all the tricks he learned cutting record after record of tunes associated with Frank Sinatra.
