ヘンデルの筆が冴え渡った最愛の作品を録音!

クリスティが、レザール・フロリサンを率いて、最愛の作品のひとつであるヘンデルのオラトリオ《快活の人、沈思の人、温和の人》を録音しました。この作品は、オラトリオとセレナータ(小規模なオペラ的作品)あるいは頌歌の中間のような、哲学的・道徳的な目的を持った作品で、やや謎めいた作品とも言われますが、歌詞に即したヘンデルの楽曲づけやオーケストラの書法の見事さ、さらに歌唱パートの旋律の美しさなど、ヘンデルの魅力が満載となっています。クリスティはこの作品に並々ならぬ愛着を持っており、2007年にはパリのオペラ座で上演もしています。この作品は、ロンドンの聴衆がヘンデルのイタリア語のオペラに飽きてきた頃であった1740年の冬に、わずか2週間で書き上げられました。第1部と第2部のテキストはジョン・ミルトンの原作に基づいて、チャールズ・ジェネンズ(メサイアの台本もジェネンズによる)が台本を作りました。第3部はジェネンズのオリジナルです。第1部「アレグロ」はヘンデルの自画像のようなオルガンのアドリブ部分が含まれ、続く第2部の「ペンセローゾ」ではミルトンの哲学的な言葉が音によって描かれます。そして第3部の「モデラート」では"何事も中庸に(ほどよく=moderato)"ということが大事なのだと歌われています。この作品の準備にあたり、'Don't just play the notes, paint every word(音符を演奏するのではなく、ひとつひとつの言葉を描くように)'と奏者たちに何度も繰り返したというクリスティ。器楽奏者たちは、歌手および歌手の言葉に寄り添って演奏、言葉の抑揚にあわせて表情を変えており、歌手とアンサンブルの驚異的な一体感が生まれています。歌手たちのうまさ、そしてレザール・フロリサン独特の、やわらかでどこまでも自然な抑揚の管弦楽の美しさに圧倒される内容です。
