Messy is an auspicious debut from British singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Olivia Dean. "Dont need to be ready/Its OK if its messy/Im on your side," she gently offers on the title song, a ballad of affirmation in which she notes that she fits the characterization herself. While Dean also writes candidly of anxiousness, uncertainty, instability, and "choosing the hard way," Messy is exceptionally refined -- sometimes safer, more "elders pleasing," than necessary -- for a first album. "Dive" is the top highlight, a lilting bit of throwback pop-soul conveying the rush of new love. This also includes her philosophical post-breakup 2020 single "The Hardest Part," like "Dive" a BPI-certified platinum hit. ~ Andy Kellman
