バングルス解散(後に再結成)以降、ソロ作やマシュー・スウィートとのデュオ作でも変わらぬ歌声を披露しているスザンナ・ホフスがカバー・アルバムをリリース!取り上げている楽曲は年代問わずバラエティに富んでおり、ローリング・ストーンズ、スクイーズ、ヤズーからファントム・プラネット、エド・シーラン、ビリー・アイリッシュらの名曲をセレクト!原曲が持つメロディの良さを活かしたシンプルなアレンジでキュートな歌声をじっくり堪能できます!バングルス時代もサイモン&ガーファンクル『冬の散歩道』や、ソロでもシンディ・ローパー『アンコンディショナル・ラヴ』をヒットさせた実績があり、彼女が取り上げる楽曲への想いも伝わってくるような作品です!

バングルスのスザンナ・ホフスによる、新しいカヴァー・アルバム『The Deep End』が登場。スタジオ・アルバムのリリースは2021年の『Bright Lights』以来で、通算5作目のソロ・アルバムとなる。

今作はローリング・ストーンズ、スクイーズ、レスリー・ゴーアなどの有名曲から、エド・シーラン、ビリー・アイリッシュ、ブランディ・クラークといった最近のアーティストまで全13曲のカヴァー曲を収録。ピーター・アッシャーがプロデュース。

Susanna Hoffs started focusing on covers when she struck up a partnership with fellow power-popper Matthew Sweet back in the mid-2000s. Hoffs went her own way with 2021s Bright Lights, a tasteful collection that focused directly on some of her primary inspirations: Chris Bell, Pete Ham, Michael Nesmith, and Prince. For The Deep End, she expands her purview to include such contemporary songwriters as Joy Oladokun, Holly Humberstone, and Dodie, while also finding space for versions of songs by both Phantom Planet and Coconut Records, thereby covering the extended Jason Schwartzman musical universe. There are some more familiar names, too: she recasts the Rolling Stones "Under My Thumb" so its not a misogynist anthem, croons Lesley Gores girl group standard "You Dont Own Me," and sings Squeezes "Black Coffee in Bed." The blend of old and new is skillful and handsome, as is the album as a whole; it serves as a testament to Hoffs taste as a fan and record-maker. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

マシュー・スウィートとのタッグも含めてカヴァーづいているスザンナだが、『Bright Lights』に続く2年ぶりのソロ新作もカヴァー・アルバムだ。ただ、スタンダードでも懐メロでもなく、ホリー・ハンバーストーンの"Deep End"やジョイ・オラドクン"If You've Got A Problem"など若い世代の楽曲も積極的に取り上げているのが興味深い。自由に楽しむ姿が浮かぶような好盤だ。
