こちらは、ニール・ヤング・ウィズ・ザ・サンタモニカ・フライヤーズとしてロンドンのレインボー・シアターで行った1973年11月のライヴの模様を収録した、作品番号OBS 6『SOMEWHERE UNDER THE RAINBOW』の2枚組アナログ盤!

ロック・シーンにおける孤高のレジェンド、ニール・ヤング。今もなお現代に伝えたい言葉をまとめあげた新作の発表にとどまらず、ロック史に燦然と輝く彼のカタログ作品や貴重なライヴ音源、未発表音源などを紐解いていくアーカイヴ・シリーズをリリースし続け、休むことなく歌と言葉を世界に発信し続ける、まさに「生ける伝説」の名に相応しい存在だ。

彼が紐解いていくアーカイヴ・シリーズには、ニール・ヤングが発表してきたオフィシャル・アルバムをまとめあげる「オフィシャル・リリース・シリーズ(通称ORS)」、貴重なライヴ音源をまとめあげる「オフィシャル・パフォーマンス・シリーズ(通称OPS)」、未発表音源な貴重なアーカイヴ音源をまとめあげる「スペシャル・リリース・シリーズ(通称SRS)」などがあるが、その中でも一際異彩を放ち、多彩な驚きとサウンドに満ちたシリーズが、ブートレグとして非常に評価の高いライヴ音源を公式音源として発表するこの「オフィシャル・ブートレグ・シリーズ(通称OBS)」だ。現在までに4作品発売されているこのシリーズから、第三弾リリースとなる2作品が新たに発表されることとなった!(1/2)

今回発表されるのは、当時ニール・ヤングが自分の名前を伏せて、気の置けない仲間たちと様々なクラブにサプライズ出演していた時に使っていたバンド名、THE DUCKS名義での、1977年夏の非常に貴重なライヴ音源を収録した作品番号OBS 2の『HIGH FLYIN'』と、ブートレグとしても非常に高い評価を持つ、1973年11月にロンドンにあるレインボー・シアターにて開催されたニール・ヤングとサンタモニカ・フライヤーズとのパフォーマンスの模様を収録した、作品番号OBS 6の『SOMEWHERE UNDER THE RAINBOW』の2作品だ。

この『SOMEWHERE UNDER THE RAINBOW』は、ニール・ヤング・ウィズ・サンタモニカ・フライヤーズによるライヴ・アルバムで、ロンドンにあるレインボー・シアターでのパフォーマンスの模様を収録した作品だ。ニール・ヤング(ヴォーカル、ギター)とニルス・ロフグレン(リード&リズム・ギター、ピアノ、アコーディオン、ヴォーカル)、ベン・キース(ペダル・スティール・ギター、ヴォーカル)、ビリー・タルボット(ベース・ヴォーカル)、そしてラルフ・モリーナ(ドラム、ヴォーカル)という豪華なラインナップが集うこのバンドが引き起こすケミストリーとハイ・エナジーなパフォーマンスを凝縮したこの夜は、時を越えて高く賞賛され続けているライヴだと言えるだろう。

即興的で常軌を逸するようなパフォーマンスで迎えられた一夜は、この50年の間にまるで神話のように語り継がれる伝説となったといっても過言ではないだろう。どのミュージシャンも、フリーフォームな精神状態で、型にはまらず各楽曲のスタイルに囚われることなく全曲で圧巻のパフォーマンスを繰り広げていたのだ。この2枚組のアルバムは、大胆不敵に大きく鳴り響くサウンドと魂をサウンドに封じ込めた作品であり、ニール・ヤングのファンにとっては、型破りであると同時に忘れがたい偉業であると評価されているパフォーマンスを公式に手に入れられる作品となるだろう。レコーディング・エンジニアのピート・ロングによるライナーノーツは、この論争を巻き起こすコンサートの真相に迫り、あの二度とない貴重な時間と場所を追体験できるような内容になっている。(2/2)

Recorded at Londons Rainbow Theater in November of 1973, Somewhere Under the Rainbow captures Neil Young at the height of the Tonights the Night era, having finished that tumultuous album just months earlier and already taking the material to the stage. The Santa Monica Flyers, Neils backing band on this tour, consisted of pedal steel player Ben Keith, bassist Billy Talbot, drummer Ralph Molina, and Nils Lofgren jumping between piano, guitar, and even occasional accordion. As with so many of the entries in Neil Youngs Official Bootleg Series, Somewhere Under the Rainbow circulated as a rough audience recorded bootleg for decades before this official release, and professional mastering can only polish the raw sound quality to a certain point. For this kind of live document, the imperfections are part of the charm. Though boomy renditions of "Albuquerque" and "Mellow My Mind" sound like theyre transmitting from the other side of a football field, theres a warm gelling of the vocals and instruments that doesnt happen with more defined multi-track recordings. Anyone deep enough into the Neil bootleg rabbit hole is probably already aware of Roxy Tonights the Night Live, a far clearer recording of a club date that happened a few months after the Rainbow gig. Roxy has the same backing band and a similar set list, but the two nights carry significantly different energies. While Neil seems to be in loose, jokey form on both, Somewhere Under the Rainbow tones things down for a string of acoustic numbers that werent a part of the more rocking Roxy date. This begins with a long, ghostly take on "Tonights the Night" (the second time in the set the band plays the tune), the Buffalo Springfield-era song "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong," the always moving "Helpless," and several others. The night ends with a burning rendition of "Cowgirl in the Sand." Neils voice cracks a little, and theres an especially wobbly quality to the way the band moves through the 12-plus-minute jam on the song, but it works with the rest of the set. Somewhere Under the Rainbow manages to feel intimate and hushed even when its rocking hard and spilling out messily. All of the Official Bootleg Series releases are valuable documents of various phases of Neils career, but this one has a personality that sets it apart. ~ Fred Thomas
