注目の四重奏団による大好評シリーズの最終作、「プリズム」第5弾

デンマーク弦楽四重奏団による大好評シリーズ『プリズム』がこの第5弾をもってついに完結となります。8年がかりのプロジェクトでした。シリーズのアルバムはすべて、独特のバッハのフーガと晩年のベートーヴェンの四重奏曲、同様にベートーヴェンの四重奏曲と後の巨匠の四重奏曲とが結び付けられ、「音楽の光はベートーヴェンのプリズムを通して分かれる」という団員たちの言葉に即したものでした。イギリスの『ガーディアン』紙には「そのアプローチそのものによって私たちは自発的にひたむきに聴くように導かれる。このグループはヴィルトゥオジティ、激しさ、そして愛情を持って演奏している」と書かれました。ヨハン・セバスティアン・バッハのコラール前奏曲『汝の御座に、われ進み出で』が「花が咲くように始まり」(音楽評論家ポール・グリフィスによるライナーノーツ)、次にルートヴィヒ・ヴァン・ベートーヴェンの弦楽四重奏曲第16番ヘ長調、そしてベートーヴェンとシェーンベルクにインスパイアされ、1905年に作曲されたヴェーベルンの初期の四重奏曲が続いた後、再び『フーガの技法』からの「コントラプンクトゥス14」でバッハに戻ります。

The Danish String Quartets Prism V is the last in a series of "Prism" releases, each presenting one of Beethovens five late string quartets, prefaced by a Bach work that could have been a source for some of Beethovens thematic material, and followed by a more contemporary work. The idea is a promising one, for Beethoven indisputably made a deep study of Bachian counterpoint in his later years, and several releases in the series have been revelatory. The finale seems to offer an attractive symmetry; the opening Bach work is the Chorale Prelude, BWV 668 ("Vor deinem Thron tret ich"), which was published with The Art of Fugue and was Bachs last completed composition, and the program proceeds with Beethovens String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135, Beethovens final full piece. The thematic links in this case are a bit hazier than on the other albums, and making the Beethoven quartet sound Bach-inspired takes quite a bit of effort on the players parts; the rough humor of the work is shoved to the background. This said, the performance of the Beethoven quartet itself is up to the Danish Quartets usual very high standard; it is an unorthodox but absorbing reading with great control and detail. Anton Weberns youthful and ultra-Romantic String Quartet of 1905, not often heard, is another attraction here. The program ends with the unfinished final fugue of Bachs The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080, breaking off in mid-measure as if to suggest that there is more on the way from this superb group. Admirers of the Danish String Quartets series will be satisfied with this release, and indeed, they put it on classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2023. ~ James Manheim
