カナダの人気現代作曲家、クリストファー・タイラー・ニッケル(b.1978)による超大作、オラトリオ「マルコによる福音書(The Gospel According to Mark / GATM」! 1月～3月にかけて配信限定で3つの抜粋盤がリリースされていましたが、ついにCD7枚組の全曲セットが発売となりました。
テキストには伝統的なラテン語やドイツ語ではなく、英語プロテスタントのテキストが選択され、欽定訳聖書(King James bible)の「マルコによる福音書」第1章～第16章全文(!)を用いているという規格外のオラトリオ。室内楽サイズの弦楽オーケストラに2本のホルン、オーボエ(オーボエ・ダモーレ)、コール・アングレ(バス・オーボエ)を加えた編成に、ソプラノ、アルト(メゾ・ソプラノ)、テノール、バス(バリトン)の独唱で構成され、他のオラトリオとは異なり、歌手は特定の人物を表すのではなく、語り手と合唱を兼ねています。全部で約7時間に及ぶという超大作のオラトリオで、平和と動乱、闇と光のコントラストを通してリスナーを福音書の旅に誘います。

クリストファー・タイラー・ニッケル(1978-)はコンサートホール用の作品だけでなく、映画、テレビ、劇場のための音楽も得意とするカナダの作曲家。代表作には、各種オーボエ&オーボエ・ダモーレのための作品(無伴奏、ソナタ、室内楽、協奏曲)やクライド・ミッチェルが指揮した交響曲第2番、ノースイースタン・ペンシルヴェニア・フィルハーモニックが4万人の聴衆を集めた「自由のためのファンファーレ」、演劇ではジュール・ヴェルヌの「海底二万里」を題材にしたミュージカルやCatchingART Contemporary Balletのためのバレエ音楽、バンクーバーのシェイクスピア・フェスティヴァル「Bard on the Beach」の音楽などがあり、イギリスのAvieレーベルから、オーボエ協奏曲集(AV2433)、交響曲第2番(AV2456)、オーボエのためのソナタ&室内楽作品集(AV2558)などがリリースされています。これまで、SOCAN(カナダ作曲家・著者・音楽出版社協会)賞4回、パークシティ映画音楽祭2004年金賞、レオ賞(カナダ、ブリティッシュコロンビア州の映画・テレビ業界向けの賞)2回(ノミネート14回)、西カナダ音楽賞ノミネートなどの栄誉に輝いています。

カナダ=アメリカの指揮者クライド・ミッチェルは、コロンビア交響楽団(コロンビア共和国の首都ボゴタ)とツーソン交響楽団(米アリゾナ州)で首席ホルン奏者を務めた後、シャルル・デュトワが指揮する名門モントリオール交響楽団で副首席ホルン奏者も経験。モントリオール大学で教鞭を執り、バンクーバー交響楽団のレジデント兼アソシエイト・コンダクターの役職を9年間務めた後、自身でライオンズ・ゲート・シンフォニア(バンクーバーのプロ・オケ)を創設し、クリストファー・タイラー・ニッケルの交響曲第2番などを初演しています。
