トニー・ヴィスコンティのプロデュースによるデビュー・アルバム『Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?』 デーモン・アルバーンもゲスト参加!

ポール・シムノン(ザ・クラッシュ、ゴリラズ、ザ・グッド、ザ・バッド・アンド・ザ・クイーン)と元ソフトマシーンのケヴィン・エアーズの娘で、シンガー・ソング・ライターのギャレン・エアーズによるポップ・デュオ=Galen & Paul(ギャレン&ポール)。ポール・シムノンはコロナのロックダウンの際、スペインのマヨルカ島で曲作りを行い、絵画を描き、さらに地元のミュージシャンとコラボ―レーションを行うことで、1年半の期間に、大きなインスピレーションを得た。ロンドンに戻り、友人のシンガー・ソング・ライター、ギャレン・エアーズとさらにアイデアを練り、さらにソングライティングを行った。ポールとデュエットし、英語とスペイン語で歌うギャレンのゴージャスな声に導かれ出来上がったアルバムは、フランスのシャンソン、スペインのポップ、イギリスのシーシャンティを取り入れた、極上のポップ・アルバムだ。
ポールは、「ザ・クラッシュにいた頃、マネージャーのバーニー・ローズが、アンドリュー・ルーグ・オールダムがミック・ジャガーとキース・リチャーズを台所に閉じ込めたことを話してくれたのを覚えているんだ。 彼は『曲を書くまで出さないぞ』って言ったんだ。ギャレンと俺は事実上そうしていた。毎晩、また別の曲を書いていたよ」。ギャレンはこう付け加えた。「かなり早い段階で気づいたのは、何度も曲を完成させたけれど、ささいなことが気にかかったの。私はポールに、"みんな気に入ってくれると思うけど、もっと何かが必要だと 思う "と言ったの。すると彼は"俺もそう思う"と言った。そして、お互いが納得するまで曲を書いたの。だから、私はこのコラボレーションに自信を持ってる。限界はないのよ」。
アルバムのリード・シングル「ロンリー・タウン」は、マヨルカ島に滞在していたポールが書いたもので、裕福な外国人や観光客が冬に去った後、季節外れの行楽地に残るゴーストタウンのような寒さを嘆いている。プロデュースを務めたのはデイヴィッド・ボウイほか、数々の名作を手掛けたトニー・ヴィスコンティ。バンド・メンバーはサイモン・トング(ザ・ヴァーヴ、ザ・グッド、ザ・バッド・アンド・ザ・クイーン)、セバスチャン・ロック フォード(ポーラー・ベア、デヴィッド・バーン、パティ・スミス)、ダン・ドノバン(ビッグ・オーディオ・ダイ ナマイト)で、多くの楽曲でデーモン・アルバーンがメロディカのプレイで参加している。

While he was riding out the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in a small fishing village in Spain, Paul Simonon spent his time painting and singing songs, eventually doing a little busking in the streets once it was relatively safe to be out and about. The experience lit a dormant fire in the former Clash bassist, who had pretty much put music to the side since a stint playing with the Good, the Bad & the Queen in 2018. Once back in London, Simonon teamed with singer/songwriter Galen Ayers to put together an album of songs -- Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day? -- that would tie in nicely with his busking experience. They roped in members of the Good, the Bad & the Queen (Damon Albarn and Simon Tong), Sons of Kemet drummer Seb Roachford, former Big Audio Dynamiter Dan Donovan, and in the producers chair, the legendary Tony Visconti. Simonon, of course, provides all the bass. The all-star cast takes a very laid-back approach -- never playing two notes where one will do -- and Visconti displays a very light touch that gives plenty of room to the two singers. They pair nicely to get a sound thats a post-punk update on Nancy & Lee but also feels like two friends breezing through some favorite old tunes. All the songs are newly written, however, by Ayers and Simonon, and touch on a variety of continental styles as well as some familiar areas. As for the latter, there are a few tracks like the Del Shannon-inspired "Lonely Town" and "Room at the Top" that blend Gorillaz-style grooves with "Ghost Town" vibes. Donovans keyboard work is Jerry Dammers-worthy, and the spare production is perfect. Alongside these tracks that hew closely to what one might expect given Simonons pedigree, the duo take a few cracks at romantic Latin balladry -- "Hacia Arriba" and "No Es Necesario" -- and come out winners thanks to Ayers vocal skill and the bands sure-handedness. They also play a few uptempo Latin numbers, take a detour to France for the winking "Ive Never Had a Good Time...In Paris," and drop in a couple of songs for seafarers. "The Lighthouse Waltz" is a mournful ballad where the singers take turns getting sadder as the band whips up faded, ghostly backing; "A Sea Shanty" is a jaunty ska-inspired take on the ubiquitous pandemic meme thats saved from its watery grave by an inspired vocal from Simonon where he comes close to the fiery singer people remember from "The Guns of Brixton." Its been a long time since the Clash treaded the boards, though, and almost as long since Simonons voice was heard on wax. Its great to have him back, and hes found a perfect writing and singing partner in Ayers. With the bands help, theyve captured a mood on Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day? thats peaceful, easy, and a treat to dip back into whenever the stress of the day-to-day threatens to overwhelm. ~ Tim Sendra
