To Myself, issued independently in 2019 and re-released the next year by major-label Island, was a strong full-length introduction to a contemporary soul artist whose molten contralto does not match her alias. Dropped shortly thereafter, Baby Rose found a new home at Secretly Canadian in 2022 and returned with a single more urgent and narcotizing than her previous output. The woozily rocking "Go" was an impassioned demand for commitment with terse turns of phrase: "For me, be a martyr/For you, Ill be a rider/Until we expire." On the virtual flipside "Fight Club," Rose sang of breaking through anxieties over rumbling funk assisted by Georgia Anne Muldrow. Those two songs arent merely representative of Through and Through; they also start the album, one that is altogether more dreamlike and less inhibited than To Myself. Regardless of the materials ethereal qualities, the singers words seem to come from a very real place. The loping funk of "Paranoid" contains what might be the most evocative use of the rollercoaster-as-life metaphor. Rose purposefully switches to distressed higher notes in its chorus, where she expresses the unease of being fully exposed to the elements, stuck in a loop, not in control -- enduring what others tell her is fun. Graver yet is "Stop the Bleeding," a storming piano-and-strings ballad of co-dependent paralysis. On the opposite end of the dark moments is "Love Bomb," an invitation to an escapist couples skate on cloud nine, and the heated and equally persuasive "Dance with Me," a slow jam for grinding hips. The best of the songs that fall somewhere between is the drifting and slightly trippy "Tell Me Its Real," in which Rose asks for assurance with her softest vocal, sensing both ecstasy and misery as possibilities. Having articulated a gamut of emotions regarding personal strife and unresolved romance, Rose pulls a Phyllis Hyman by closing the album with a message song of hope decked out with brass and a childrens choir. Its as courageous as anything that precedes it and sends the listener off with a spring in their step. ~ Andy Kellman
