シュールでアートな音世界で、独自のサイケデリックな摩訶不思議ワールドを極め続ける、現代のカルト・アイコン、ザ・フレーミング・リップス。鬼才ウェイン・コイン率いる彼らが2002年に発表した通算10作目となるスタジオ・アルバムにして、そのエレクトロでサイケデリックなインディ・ロック・サウンドが非常に高い評価を受け、彼らをメインストリームのバンドへと押し上げた名作『YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS』 時代に生まれた2作のEPが、待望の初アナログ化!しかもカラー・ヴァイナルでのリリースとなる。

元々は2003年末に発表されたEP『EGO TRIPPING AT THE GATES OF HELL』。アルバム『YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS』 収録曲「Ego Tripping At The Gates of Hell」をタイトルに冠したこのEPは、同曲のリミックス・ヴァージョンを2曲(うち1つはジェイソン・ベントリーが手掛けている)、そして「Do You Realize??」のポスタル・サーヴィスによるリミックス、さらに4つのアルバム未収録曲をフィーチャーしている。本EPの収録曲は昨年発売された6枚組CDボックス『YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS (20TH-ANNIVERSARY BOX SET)』にも収録されているが、本EPがアナログとしてリリースされるのは今回が初めてとなる。

EGO TRIPPING AT THE GATES OF HELL, the second companion EP to the Flaming Lips' acclaimed YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS trumps its predecessor, FIGHT TEST, by featuring four previously unreleased songs and three remixes. The first three, sun-themed tunes--"Assassination of the Sun," "I'm a Fly in a Sunbeam (Following the Funeral Procession of a Stranger)," and "Sunship Balloons"--are laid-back, reflective songs that continue in the mellower vein of the YOSHIMI album. The remixes, however, are more upbeat; "Do You Realize (T.P.S. Remix)" and "Ego Tripping (Jason Bentley Remix)" are 1980s-influenced, synth-laden renditions, while "Ego Tripping (Self-Admiration with Blow-Up Mix)" is a study in creative beat-making that utilizes a vocal snippet as percussion. Finally, the Christmas-loving trio offers a Yuletide tune of its own devising, "A Change at Christmas (Say It Isn't So)," complete with jingle bells. Clocking in at more than 30 minutes, EGO TRIPPING is sure to satisfy Flaming Lips fans until the group's next quirky pop masterpiece.
