ストラヴィンスキー: バレエ「春の祭典」・「火の鳥」

2022年10月、全国が注目する来日ツアーを果たした26歳のスター指揮者クラウス・マケラとパリ管弦楽団。来日プログラムのメイン曲、ストラヴィンスキーの《春の祭典》と《火の鳥》を収録した、音楽監督を務めるパリ管との録音第1弾をリリース。

クラウス・マケラは1996年フィンランド生まれの26歳。12歳からシベリウス・アカデミーにてチェロと指揮を学び、若くしてスウェーデン放送交響楽団の首席客指揮者に就任したほか、これまでにフィンランド放送響、ヘルシンキ・フィル、ライプツィヒ放送響など、世界の一流オーケストラと共演し、いずれも高い評価を得て「数十年に一度の天才指揮者の登場」とも評される大成功を収めています。

2020年、24歳の若さでノルウェーのオスロ・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者に就任、翌2021年のシーズンからは、名門パリ管弦楽団の音楽監督にも就任しました。先日、楽団員の投票により、2027年から10年契約でロイヤル・コンセルトヘボウ管弦楽団の首席指揮者に就任することも発表されるなど、クラシック界の新時代を象徴するニュースで大きな話題を集めました。

Klaus Makela is one of the hottest young conductors on the scene, and many listeners may have been something revelatory in this recording of Stravinskys famed ballets, The Rite of Spring and The Firebird, the latter presented complete. The album landed on classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2023, and it may have been curiosity that put it there. Opinions about the album may differ, for it tends toward the modest rather than toward the raw energy offered by, say, Leonard Bernstein in his classic recording. Makela prizes instrumental detail over rhythmic intensity. Sample the famed second section of The Rite of Spring, "Les augures printaniers," where listeners have mental images of the original Parisian audience in an uproar. In Makelas reading, one may wonder what all the fuss was about, but listen again to the detail of the wind writing that comes through in this section here, and that is missed in readings that favor slashing in the strings. Perhaps The Firebird, with its vast orchestral canvas, is the stronger of the two readings here, for Makelas control over the complex textures is perfect, and the album as a whole bodes very well for his directorship at the Orchestre de Paris; the orchestra plays at its very best. Those who want to relive the excitement of Bernstein or Abbado may wish to at least sample well here, but there is more than one way to play Stravinsky. ~ James Manheim
