1992年アメリカ生まれ、英国のオックスフォードを拠点に活躍する作曲家エリック・マッケロイの歌曲集。
すでにオーケストラや室内楽、ピアノのための作品を数多く発表しているマッケロイは、20世紀の詩人たちの詩にも関心が高く、彼らのテキストを元にした作品など多くを発表しています。
ロバート・グレーヴスの「死んだ男の残り火」は戦争を主題に、またアルバムタイトルでもあるグレヴェル・リンドップの「炎の舌」からは詩の持つ官能性が引き出されています。

これらの歌曲を表情豊かに歌うのは英国のベテラン・テノール、ジェイムス・ギルクリスト。彼がレーベルに録音した「英国歌曲の100年」シリーズはメディアで高く評価されています。ピアノは作曲家自身が担当しています。
