Big Picture

イギリス出身で現在はニューヨークを拠点に活動するシンガーソングライター、フェンネ・リリーの新作が完成。ブラッド・クック(ボン・イヴェール、スネイル・メイル、ワクサハッチー)をプロデューサーに迎えた2年半ぶりとなるサード・アルバム『ビッグ・ピクチャー』、リリース。

イギリス出身で現在はニューヨークを拠点に活動するアーティスト、Fenne Lilyが、Dead Oceansからニュー・アルバム『Big Picture』をリリースする。Fenneの過去2年間をゴージャスに描いた『Big Picture』は、自己治癒力を高めるために制作され、見事なカタルシスを与えてくれる。「このアルバムを書くことは、2020年という大災害にある種の秩序をもたらす試みだった。この時代の最も脆弱な部分を記録することで、ある種の自律性を取り戻したように感じた」とFenneは語る。思索的でありながら率直な『Big Picture』は、歌詞的にもサウンド的にも、Fenneにとってこれまでで最もまとまりのある毅然とした作品となった。「これは悲しいアルバムではなく、私のやり方が許す限り、高揚感のある作品だ。愛はプロセスであって、失ったり見つけたりするものではない」と彼女は語る。
収録される10曲は、Fenneにとって最初で唯一の、恋愛の過程で書かれた曲だ。2018年の『On Hold』と2020年の『BREACH』はどちらも、過ぎ去った愛に別れを告げる、回顧の痛みに立ち向かっている。一方、『Big Picture』その正反対で、現在にしっかりと根を張り、崩壊しないよう懸命に努力する2人の物語を一緒に辿っている。ブリストルのアパートで孤独に『Big Picture』を書き上げた後、Fenneは意識的にレコーディングのプロセスをこれまでで最もコラボレーティヴなものにすることを目指した。ダーラムのスタジオでBrad Cook(Waxahatchee、Kevin Morby、Snail Mail)と共同プロデュースを行ったFenneは、曲が書かれたコンパクトな空間を音で表現し、温かく正直で心地よいものを作ることを意図していた。
レコーディングには、Fenneのツアー・バンドに加え、Christian Lee Hutson(G)とKaty Kirby(Vo)が参加。ミキシングはJay SomのMelina Duterteが担当した。

When Fenne Lily wrote the songs for her sophomore album, 2020s Breach, during a self-imposed period of isolation, she couldnt have known that the COVID-19 pandemic was soon going to force that hand. Following a stretch of being unable to write, the follow-up, Big Picture, was eventually penned haltingly over the course of two pandemic years, a time span that coincided with an ill-fated relationship ultimately tracked in real time through her songs. Theres a similarly delicate, melancholy sigh to Big Picture as to its predecessor, despite a new production team (Brad Cook and Lily herself) and its in-the-moment inspirations. She sets the stage with "Map of Japan," whose sultry, midtempo twang, active bass, spare drums, vibraphone-style Mellotron, and breathy vocals could pass muster as a tribute to Mazzy Star. That band is a fitting reference point for the hazy, ruminative zone of Big Picture, which was mixed by Jay Soms Melina Duterte and has occasional gritty electric guitar interjections, including on this song. The album goes on to offer a range of dreaminess, arguably reaching its lushest and loudest point on the jammy outro to "Superglued," its liveliest on the appreciative, post-breakup "Lights Light Up" (though there is a case to be made for the jaunty but fatalistic "Pick"), and its sparsest on the brittle, comfort-seeking "Henry," which still features a full band. The musical contrasts arent far-ranging, however, and similarly, even the most optimistic lyrics seem to be biding time ("I guess we don’t really know what we’re looking for/’Til we have everything and still want more"). Big Picture ends at what seems like the middle of the story, on a train home to her partner ("I made no promises that I would stay, but I’ll try") on the atmospheric "Half Finished," whose quiet shimmer, echoing multi-tracked vocals, and not-so-quiet woolly effects are ultimately suffocating. ~ Marcy Donelson
