イギリス/マンチェスター出身の"アコースティック・エレクトロニカ・トリオ"= GoGo Penguin(ゴーゴー・ペンギン)の、レーベル移籍第一弾となるフル・アルバム『Everything Is Going to Be OK』。レーベルはベルリンを拠点とするXXIM Records(トゥエンティワンエム・レコーズ)。レコーディングは2022年7月、リアル・ワールド・スタジオで行われた。メンバーはクリス・アイリングワース(p)、ニック・ブラッカ(b)と新たにバンドに加入したドラマー、ジョン・スコット(ds)。パンデミックはバンドに様々なチャレンジをもたらし、グループとして何が大事なのか再認識する機会を得たという。3人は友人としても一層の絆を深め、以前よりトリオとしてパワーアップし新たな道へと歩み始めたのだった。
本作は、時に予期しない出来事や試練も伴ったここ数年を経て再び始動するバンドの、その特別な瞬間をとらえた作品となっている。

British trio GoGo Penguin recorded Everything Is Going to Be OK during an emotionally heavy period of tragedy and loss. Bassist Nick Blackas mother and brother both died of cancer within months of each other, and pianist Chris Illingworth mourned the death of his grandmother. Additionally, drummer Rob Turner announced his departure from the group near the end of 2021. Joined by new drummer Jon Scott, the bandmembers wrote and played music together as a form of escape, and as a way to heal. The music retains the familiar sound theyve been honing since their formation, featuring circular melodies and sophisticated drumming inspired by electronic dance music, but performed by a primarily acoustic jazz trio formation. However, theres unmistakably a more melancholic, bittersweet feel to these songs. The piano melodies of the delicate, tricky "Glimmerings" send shivers down the spine, and the intricate, gliding basslines of "Saturnine" are similarly haunting, yet the groups music is enticing rather than foreboding. While the album has tense, moody moments like the slowly drifting "Friday Film Special," "Glow" is more playful, coming closer to a sort of live band IDM, with complex drumming and chiming, resonant melodies. "Soon Comes Night" is a panoramic crawl with distorted drums and heavy dub-like effects constantly toppling downwards. "We May Not Stay" reflects on mortality, starting out calmly before quickly erupting into a flurry of cascading pianos and skittering drums, then coming to an abrupt halt at the end. The albums gorgeous, blossoming title track and both versions of the brief but shining "Youre Stronger Than You Think" demonstrate how theyve maintained hope and positivity throughout these trying times. While working through the process of grief and healing, GoGo Penguin have created some of their most comforting and optimistic music. ~ Paul Simpson

第1期の集大成となるセルフ・タイトル作から3年ぶりとなる通算6作目は、新たなドラマーを迎え、レーベルも移籍してのリリース。いつにも増して作り込まれた印象の音像にはもちろんパンデミックも影響したのだろう。ゆったりと展開していく"Friday Film Special"や主旋律が強い印象を残す"Saturnine"などを聴くと、やはりライヴへの期待値が高まるというものだ。
