Grandfather Courage

過去グラミー賞を3度受賞。コンテンポラリー・ブルースをリードするアーティスト、ファンタスティック・ネグリートが、グラミー賞にノミネートされた2022年の最新アルバム『ホワイト・ジーザス・ブラック・プロブレムズ』の楽曲を、アコースティック・スタイルで再構築。

グラミーを三度受賞したシンンガー/ソングライター/ミュージシャン/活動家、Fantastic NegritoことXavier Dphrepaulezzは、4枚目のアルバム『White Jesus Black Problems』を2022年6月3日、自身のレーベル、Storefront Recordsよりリリースした。自らの祖先を調べ、そこからインスピレーションを受けたアルバム『White Jesus Black Problems』は、高い評価を獲得。収録曲「Oh Betty」は、第65回グラミー賞で「Best American Roots Performance」にノミネートされている。
アルバムのリリース後、Fantastic Negritoは朝霧JAM出演の為に来日。単独公演もおこなった。
当『Grandfather Courage』は、『White Jesus Black Problems』の楽曲をアコースティック・スタイルで再構築したアルバムとなる。

Fantastic NegritoことXavier Dphrepaulezz(イグザヴィア・ディーフレッパレーズ)は、米カリフォルニア州オークランドの正統派イスラム教徒の家庭で育った。銃で襲われる等、死と隣り合わせの環境下、1993年にInterscopeと契約。1995年にXavier名義でアルバム『The X Factor』をリリースするも、1999年、交通事故で瀕死の重傷となり、音楽活動から離れる。
2014年、再びオークランドの路上で演奏を開始したXavier は、2015年にNPRの第1回「Tiny Desk Concert」で優勝。2016年にFantastic Negrito名義でのデビュー・アルバム『The Last Days of Oakland』をリリースし、第59回グラミー賞で最優秀コンテンポラリー・ブルース・アルバムを受賞した。その後も、2018年にセカンド・アルバム『Please Don't Be Dead』、2020年にサード・アルバム『Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?』とコンスタントにアルバムを発表。この2作もグラミー賞で最優秀コンテンポラリー・ブルース・アルバムを受賞し、3作連続でグラミー獲得という快挙を成し遂げた。
2022年6月には目下の最新作となる4枚目のアルバム『White Jesus Black Problems』をリリース。現在、アルバム収録曲「Oh Betty」が、第65回グラミー賞で「Best American Roots Performance」にノミネートされている。また、Fantastic Negrito は、Sturgill SimpsonからChris Cornellまで、様々なアーティストとツアーし、ほぼすべての主要フェスティバルでプレイ。StingやE-40等とコラボレーションも行い、自身のレーベル、Storefront Recordsも設立した。更に、音楽以外にも、若者の教育と能力向上を目指す都市農場、Revolution Plantationを創設している。

Grandfather Courage is an acoustic-anchored reinterpretation of White Jesus Black Problems, the 2022 album from contemporary bluesman Fantastic Negrito. Where the original record found him doubling down on the funkier, freakier aspects of his music, Grandfather Courage is streamlined, cut live in the studio with his touring band. By turning down the amplification and emphasizing interplay, Fantastic Negrito winds up highlighting the classic construction of his modern blues as well as the wounded soul at the heart of these tunes. Where White Jesus Black Problems commanded attention, requiring listeners to meet it on its own terms, Grandfather Courage rolls smooth and easy; its the first Fantastic Negrito record that seems chill.
