Field MusicのDavid Brewisが2023年2月24日にソロ・デビュー・アルバム『The Soft Struggles』をリリースする。
School of Languageとしての3枚のアルバムを経て発表されるこの作品は、ジャズの要素を取り入れたアコースティック作で、Field Musicが新たに設立したレーベル、Daylight Saving Recordsからの2枚目のアルバムとなる。『The Soft Struggles』はField Musicの多彩なパレットから離れ、Van Morrisonの『Astral Weeks』やColin Blunstoneの『One Year』One Yearのように、ストリングスを多用したチェンバー・ポップに傾倒している。
いくつかの曲は、サンダーランドにあるField Musicのスタジオで、Davidの弟、Peterがドラム、Sarah Hayes(Admiral Fallow、You Tell Me)がピアノとフルート、Faye MacCalman(Archipelago)がクラリネットとサックスをプレイし、一日でライヴ・レコーディングされた。また、シンガーのEve Cole、トロンボーンのDavid SmithとCraig Hissett、サックスのPete Fraserも参加し、Field Musicの常連であるEd Cross、Jo Montgomery、Chrissie Slater、Ele Leckieがストリングスを担当した。

For two decades, Sunderland polymath David Brewis has been making artful pop music that defies easy categorization. His primary project, Field Music, is a collaboration with his brother Peter, though he has also made a handful of solo outings as School of Language. A typical Brewis project is tightly crafted, rhythmically exciting, and melodically satisfying, albeit in a roundabout way. While The Soft Struggles -- the first release under his own name -- shares some of these traits, it is unique among his catalog for more overtly courting the classic singer/songwriter genre. Even this, though, he approaches in his own distinctive way. Writing primarily for voice and acoustic guitar, he has essentially made a footloose, slightly jazzy, chamber-folk album that bears his unmistakable hallmarks but still transports his music somewhere new. In search of spontaneity, the sessions were deliberately unrehearsed with the band -- which includes, among other guests, Peter Brewis on drums, Sara Hayes on piano and flute, and Faye MacCalman on saxophone and clarinet -- members more or less received a simple song chart and arranged it quickly in the studio. Strings and minimal overdubs were later added to complete the set, which has an appealing spring-like freshness. Seemingly intentional nods to classics like Van Morrisons Astral Weeks and Colin Blunstones One Year place Brewis music in a late-60s mode when players sat elbow to elbow, channeling the rooms energy into sophisticated organic pop. "Surface Noise" in particular plays like a breezy Morrison outtake, though Brewis cycles through a panoply of other influences from limber Latin rhythms and early-70s U.K. folk to songs that resemble quirky acoustic deconstructions of Field Musics signature art-rock style. Forgoing his own wiry tenor, he brings in Sunderland up-and-comer Eva Cole to sing the tender highlight, "When You First Meet." Closer "King of Growing Up" has a sort of Andy Partridge-in-the-shed charm with its nimble guitar figures and robust brass arrangement. The second release on the Brewis Brothers recently launched Daylight Savings imprint, The Soft Struggles is a delightful addition to the Field Music-adjacent family with plenty of its own personality to set it apart. ~ Timothy Monger
