ルネサンスの偉大な作曲家シリーズ第2弾は没後400周年のウィリアム・バード

英国のスティレ・アンティコがルネサンスの偉大な作曲家を取り上げるシリーズ三部作。第2弾は没後400年を迎えるウィリアム・バード(1543-1623)です。第1弾は2021年の没後500周年のジョスカン・デ・プレでした。第3弾は2025年に生誕500周年を迎えるジョヴァンニ・ダ・パレストリーナです。今回はウィリアム・バードの『4声のためのミサ曲』を含む偉大な作品が集められています。バードはイギリスの合唱音楽の歴史に最も影響を受けた作曲家の一人で、プロテスタントのイギリスでカトリック・スタイルで作曲して議論の的となりました。
スティレ・アンティコは18世紀以前に作曲された多声音楽を専門とするア・カペラの声楽アンサンブルです。「固い結びつきと意図の明快さ」に満ちていると『グラモフォン』誌に評されました。

The 400th anniversary year of William Byrds death gets off to a roaring start with this collection of mostly Catholic choral music from the small (mixed-gender, adult) choir Stile Antico. This justly celebrated group works without a conductor and is recognized for its flexible and sensitive treatment of texts, even in one as well-worn as that of the Catholic mass. Here, sample the "Qui propter nos homines" section from Credo of the Mass for Four Voices, which runs all the way through Christs crucifixion and resurrection. There are many performances of this Byrd masterpiece, but few that convey so much of the sense of awe and reverence with which Byrd infused these words. The Mass is broken up, as would have occurred in Byrds time, with motets appropriate to the various parts of the mass. None of these is particularly rare, but the clarity and warmth of Stile Anticos music-making here is consistently remarkable. There are a few Anglican English pieces, and for listeners who do not speak Latin, these will confirm the groups gifts in clear text articulation. A superb job all around on a release that could serve any listener well as an introduction to Byrds sacred music and made classical best-seller charts in early 2023. ~ James Manheim
