唯一無二の存在感を放つBurialを筆頭に、常に先鋭的エレクトロニック・ミュージック/ベース・ミュージックを発信し続けてきた〈Hyperdub〉の主宰にして、自身もアーティスト/DJ/ライターとして多岐にわたる活動を続ける重要人物、Kode9。
2015年にリリースした『Nothing』以来7年ぶりにして、2枚目のソロ・アルバムとなる本作『ESCAPOLOGY』は、エッセイや映像などと共に展開されるアート作品『Astro-Darien』のサウンドトラックとして制作された。
『Astro-Darien』はいくつかの表現形態で発表されており、南ロンドンのヴェニュー、"Corsica Studios"のメインフロアで2週間にわたって行われたオーディオ・ビジュアル・インスタレーションとして、更にはミュージック・コンクレートの創始者のひとりであるピエール・シェフェールが設立した、パリの現代音楽機関であるフランス音楽研究グループ、通称INA GRMが主催するイベントでの演奏を念頭に置いた作品として作成され、2021年にはそのライヴが行われている。
ベース・ミュージック、電子音楽そしてミュージック・コンクレートなど様々な要素が入り乱れるフューチャリスティックかつプリミティヴな最高傑作!

Kode9s Escapology is the audio component of a larger project called Astro-Darien, which encompasses a video game within an art installation and a sonic fiction. The story behind the project involves Scottish colonial history and space races, and its told from the point of view of the lead programmer at Trancestar North, the company developing the game. While the story presumably makes more sense if one had the opportunity to witness the installation, or listen to the audio fiction (released several months after the album), Escapology still works as a stunning experience in its own right. Heavy on brief interludes, filled with buzzing and whirring noises as well as computerized voices, the more developed, beat-driven tracks are incredible fusions of multiple styles of futuristic dance music, showcasing some of Kode9s most complex sound design to date. Tense, jittery rhythms inspired by juke and footwork guide several of the tracks, with "The Break Up" additionally marked by clattering washes of percussion and a truly jarring, high-pitched synth frazzle. "Angle of Re-Entry" similarly has restless percussion and more commanding bass, seemingly influenced by U.K. drill with its swerving up-and-down motions. The spacious "Cross the Gap" adds shimmering melodies to log drum bass patterns inspired by South Africas amapiano scene, and the remarkable "Uncoil" and "Lagrange Point" wed a variation of this bass sound to atmospheric jungle breakbeats. "Torus" is a tightly knit web of booming bass, skittering beats, and clusters of glowing microchips. Escapology is a portal into an advanced realm from an artist who has remained ahead of the game since day one. ~ Paul Simpson

ハイパーダブ主宰による7年ぶりのソロ2作目は、映像作品「Astro-Darien」のサウンドトラックに位置付けられるという一枚。フランスの電子音楽作曲家であるフランソワ・ベイルによって74年に作られた音響システム=アクースモニウムでレコーディングされたそうで、緊張感のある世界観が高解像度な音像と予測不能なリズム展開で表現されている。ベース・ミュージックを軸にさまざまな音楽的要素が入り乱れる意欲作。
